Remembrance Day is observed on November 11th to commemorate the end of World War 1, which officially took place on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. It is a time to remember those, past and present, who valiantly gave their lives for our country and for our freedom.

The Bible says in John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends“.

The following poem is a reminder of how the unwavering dedication of those who gave their lives serves as a timeless testimony of the cost of peace, and our duty to uphold it.

The Inquisitive Child – a Remembrance Day poem
– Author Unknown –

Why are they selling poppies, Mummy? Selling poppies in town today.
The poppies, child, are flowers of love. For the men who marched away.

But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy? Why not a beautiful rose?
Because my child, men fought and died in the fields where the poppies grow.

But why are the poppies so red, Mummy? Why are the poppies so red?
Red is the colour of blood, my child. The blood that our soldiers shed.

The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy. Why does it have to be black?
Black, my child, is the symbol of grief. For the men who never came back.

But why, Mummy are you crying so? Your tears are giving you pain.
My tears are my fears for you my child. For the world is forgetting again.”

Freedom is never free. As Ronald Reagan so aptly put it, “Freedom is a fragile thing and it’s never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people.  And those in world history who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again.”

Poem: In Flanders Fields

There can be no dedication to Canada’s future without a knowledge of its past.”
