Running for local office
- Determine if you’re eligible to run
- Be aware of special requirements if you work or volunteer for a local government (municipality, regional district)
- Prepare to meet the requirements for nominations
- Review the general rules on campaign finance on campaign financing and the Campaign Finance Manual
- Review the Candidates Guide for key information
- Complete the Candidate Nomination and other relevant forms
- Fill out a Registration Form available from the municipality’s Senior Election Official. List of the 137 municipalities (see page 27)
- Review other resources available for school trustee candidates
Registration for mayoral candidates opened May 1, 2026, and registration for councillor and school trustee candidates opens June 30, 2026. Nomination papers must be filed between September 16 and September 22, 2026. Municipal and school board elections will be held October 28, 2026.
Running for provincial office
- Determine if you meet the basic eligibility requirements to run
- Complete and file the nomination form and declaration of intent to run as an independent or affiliated with a political party
- View the electoral district maps and find your electoral district
